#Focus5 has supported a young man to build confidence, learn life skills and achieve success in work and higher education.
He left sixth form college where he had been studying on an ‘A’ Level course because he wasn't enjoying the subjects and didn't feel comfortable in the college environment. He was unsure what he wanted to do and he did not have a plan about his next steps.
He was incredibly anxious about work and meeting new people, suffered from low confidence and lacked a CV or any experience of applying for jobs.
Our #Focus5 key worker supported him to open a bank account and accompanied him on the train to Exeter to visit one of the project's partners, The Sound Gallery, to find out what they could offer him. He attended sessions where he shadowed a sound engineer and had two further work experience opportunities which allowed him to develop some employability skills and find out more about the industry. This also helped him with his self-confidence and he applied for a Post 16 college course with the Academy of Music and Sound, which was successful!
The #Focus5 key worker also helped him with life skills such as opening a bank account, teaching him how to budget when his wages came in and helping him navigate public transport. The project also arranged for him to spend a week on a Prince's Trust Team course, a personal development programme.
With his new found skills the young man also applied for a summer job as a full time packer with a local company and started work in July 2018 ahead of starting his RSL Level 3 Extended Diploma Music Practitioners Course.
Although he still feels anxious in certain situations #Focus5 has enabled him to find coping strategies and his self esteem has rocketed. "I have found #Focus5 very helpful. I don't think I would be in the position I am now without the support of my key worker. I feel the support I have received should be made widely available to all young people."
