Exploring beyond those four walls

Our young person was referred by a Youth Intervention Worker who was supporting him following an incident which led to police involvement. He wasn't going out anywhere and had significant concerns around accessing local community and anxiety around personal safety.

Unfortunately, his sleep pattern was completely disrupted and he had a tendency to sleep all day and was up at night, spending the majority of his time in his room watching TV with very limited interaction with the wider world including online. His Key Worker made initial visits later in the afternoon to accommodate his current sleep pattern and gradually shifted this forward over time to adapt to more daytime activities. His Key Worker got to know him through regular home visits at first with no pressure to go out.

They identified key interests, goals and aspirations and discovered his musical talented and that he is very motivated by song writing/performing. With this in mind they arranged music recording sessions with ActionTrack studios through specialist partner Take Art and took his key worker took him to these. He’s now released 6 songs to Soundcloud and is continuing to write and produce music which he would like to do professionally in the long term!

They also worked on digital organisational skills – set up an email and filing system using Google Drive , created a CV and he was supported to write speculative letter to potential employer and did some job search sessions. His key worker also supported him with an application for Universal Credit at 18 and took him to initial appointments with the work coach. He was also supported with applying for provisional driving license and driving theory test practice.

We are so pleased that with #Focus5 this young person has progressed with employability and life skills, has increased confidence in looking for work/learning/volunteering and in digital applications.  He now has an increased understanding of own strength and aptitudes and has developed strategies to remove barriers to employment/training.

He is now working at a recycling centre through an agency and says he’s really enjoying it. He is going out locally with friends and has joined a martial arts gym attending 3-4 sessions a week. On the project Participant Satisfaction/Exit Survey he rated #Focus5 as ‘very good’. We are delighted!!
