A young man supported by #Focus5 has scored himself a place on a Plymouth Argyle Football Club training programme!
The sixteen year old was referred to #Focus5 in December 2017, struggling with mental health problems and unable to engage in work or education. He had been on track to become a professional football player but didn’t quite make the grade, which left him feeling lost and lacking direction.
Initially he felt overwhelmed by #Focus5 and was not ready to engage with the project, so his key worker suggested he make contact when and if he was ready.
Putting the ball in his court and giving the young person control over whether or when to get in touch empowered this young man to finally make contact 8 months later, when he was motivated to make a change. Knowing the young man was passionate about football, his key worker took him to visit the Plymouth Argyle ‘Freshstart’ programme, to find out about training opportunities.
Freshstart is a programme offered by Plymouth Argyle Community Trust, aimed at 16-24 year olds who are currently out of education, employment or training. Learning is individually tailored to suit anybody interested in sport and students can work towards the most current and sought after qualifications, in the environment of a professional football club!
Feeling it was the perfect opportunity at the right time for the young man, our #Focus5 key worker liaised with the programme staff to access a place. The training course has now started and our student absolutely loves it!
Giving him time to reflect on what #Focus5 could do for him and allowing him the head space to engage when he was ready, means he has taken control of his own career pathway and is now learning with an amazing organisation, in an industry he is passionate about.
